"I do not think there is in Oxford any better specimen of Gothic design, old or new", wrote architectural historian Harry Goodhart-Rendel of the Chapel of Pusey House. With its Temple Moore design and its fittings by Ninian Comper - whose ciborium over the altar in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel is one of the finest examples of his work - it is one of Oxford’s hidden gems. Some of Comper’s original vestments remain in use, and others have been commissioned using his original designs.
Far from being an architectural showpiece, however, the Chapel remains a place of living worship, where the offices are chanted and the mass offered every day; either quietly in the stillness of an early weekday morning or with splendid music and full ceremonial on Sunday. It is a place where prayer continues to be offered to God in the beauty of holiness.
ALMIGHTY GOD, who didst raise up thy servant Edward Bouverie Pusey, to contend by his life and learning earnestly for the truth of the Incarnation of thy Son: Grant that this House which is established for his memorial may ever serve to thy glory, by the maintenance of the Catholic Faith, and by the preaching of thy Holy Gospel, through the same thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
