Biography
Bringing together performers and audiences in an immersive experience of the complete vocal works of Johann Sebastian Bach.
The Oxford Bach Soloists (OBS) is a Baroque ensemble, directed by Steven Grahl and founded in 2017 by Tom Hammond-Davies. OBS sets out to perform Bach’s works as he himself would have realised them with performers, instruments, and venues that echo the university and churches of Bach’s hometown of Leipzig.
Bach’s music is community music. He was famously networked amongst an extended family of musicians in northern Germany. Today, OBS champions our local choral scholars, students, players, conductors, and soloists who participate in our high-quality performances and the diverse audiences of all ages which come to listen and enjoy a unique musical experience.
Programme
Conducted by Steven Grahl, with Henrik Persson (cello), Dónal McCann (organ), Anhad Arora (harpsichord), and OBS Scholars.
J.S. Bach’s Cello Suites BWV 1007–1012 are now among his best-known works, but they were largely forgotten until the early 20th century. Most likely written during his time in Köthen, each suite is based on Baroque dance forms and combines clarity, control, and expressive detail.
This six-part concert series from the Oxford Bach Soloists features all six Cello Suites performed by principal cellist Henrik Persson. Each performance also includes choral music from our scholars and keyboard works from our co-principal keyboardists.
This is the third concert in this series. Book all 6 concerts before 25th October and get 15% off!
Priority booking opens Friday 8th August for Friends and Supporters. General booking opens Friday 15th August.
