Recollection Lecture: Seeing God with St Augustine. John Ritzema, Oriel College & Pusey House.

Orthodox Christian doctrine maintains that the divine nature is inherently incorporeal and invisible. Despite this, numerous Old Testament passages clearly depict God appearing physically to ancient patriarchs, prophets, and visionaries, or manifesting gloriously within the sacred Temple. The Early Church Fathers grappled intensely with these mysterious accounts, striving deeply to reconcile them with the theology of the Incarnation. Among their responses, St Augustine of Hippo developed one of the most sophisticated—and enduringly controversial—interpretations. This upcoming lecture examines the complex theological paradox of seeing God to explore Augustine’s fascinating biography, his broader systematic theology, and his profound approach to biblical exegesis.
