St Irenaeus: The Summing Up of All Things in Christ
An introduction to the life and profound legacy of St Irenaeus of Lyons (c. 135–200 AD), a foundational theologian of the Early Church. Faced with the challenging teachings of several non-mainstream Church groups, Irenaeus contrasted this with the “apostolic” understanding, as passed down to him, in his famous text, Against Heresies. Together, we will survey some of the themes that were most important to him, including:
· The definition of Tradition and why it matters
· The nature and scope of knowledge
· What it means to be human
· The mystery of the Incarnation (why God became man)
· The beautiful concept of "Recapitulation"—the summing up of all things in Christ
