Evelyn Underhill and the Monastic Tradition

Greg Peters, Professor of Mediaeval and Spiritual Theology, Torrey Honors College, Biola University.

A Lecture to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Evelyn Underhill (1875 – 1941).

In 'Practical Mysticism' Evelyn Underhill talks about two related concepts, ‘simplified’ and ‘singleness of heart.’ Underhill echoes the language of the monastic tradition that a monk is one who is single-mindedly focused on God. Underhill's ‘monkhood of all believers’ needs to be retrieved for the renewal of monasticism within Anglicanism.
