This lecture attempts to answer three related questions. Just how ancient is the idea of a subjective or a natural right? How does it relate to the development of the law of persons, in the Roman, Common, and Canon laws? And how closely does the development of the – quite ancient, we learn – idea of a personal, pre-political right track with the development of Christian philosophical anthropology?
