While orthodox Christian doctrine maintains that the divine nature is inherently incorporeal and invisible, numerous Old Testament passages depict God appearing to patriarchs, prophets, and visionaries, or manifesting within the Temple. The Early Church Fathers grappled intensely with these accounts, striving to reconcile them with the theology of the Incarnation. Among their responses, St Augustine of Hippo developed one of the most sophisticated—and enduringly controversial—interpretations. This lecture examines the theological paradox of seeing God to explore Augustine’s biography, his broader systematic theology, and his profound approach to exegesis.
